How to dress for skiing and snowboarding

On the slopes, fast runs alternate with waiting at the lift and in the queue. You sweat while skiing and the wind chills you quickly on the chairlift, so your clothing has to keep you warm, keep out water and wind, and move sweat away at the same time. Three layers plus accessories for your hands, head and neck will do it.

Base layer: thermal underwear

A thermal top and bottoms in polyester with DRYFOR technical fibre sit close to the body and wick sweat away. The category has a winter, an all-season and a lightweight range; the men’s range also includes a thermal top and long johns in 100% merino wool. Don’t take cotton underwear to the slopes: it holds moisture and chills you in the cold.

Mid-layer: powerfleece

Between the base layer and the jacket, a stretchy jacket made of POWERFLEECE keeps the warmth in. It is brushed on the inside, protects against gusts of wind and lets sweat escape well.

Outer layer: jacket and trousers

The jacket and trousers stop snow, wind and water. Waterproofing comes from a TERATEX® membrane with a water column of 8,000–30,000 mm or a DERMIZAX™ membrane with 30,000 mm. Warmth is provided by FURTHERM, THERMOLITE® or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN synthetic insulation, and almost all jackets and trousers are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale.

Snowboarding

Snowboarders spend a lot of time sitting in the snow and falling, so it pays to have trousers with a higher water column. The category includes snowboard anoraks, which pull on over the head and fit more loosely, as well as jackets and trousers labelled ski and snowboard. Snowboarding is listed as an activity for 44 models.

Accessories: gloves, hat and neck warmer

For your hands there are ski gloves, mostly insulated with THERMOLITE®, as well as powerfleece, fleece, knitted and softshell gloves. Knitted hats and headbands, some with TECNOPOLAR® fleece, keep your head warm, and neck warmers your neck.

What to look for when choosing ski clothing

  • Water column – most often 20,000 mm; the highest value, 30,000 mm, is found in models with DERMIZAX™ and TERATEX® 30000. The higher the value, the bigger your safety margin in snowfall, wet snow and long periods sitting on snowy ground.
  • Breathability – in the range of 6,000–30,000 g/m²/24 h, most often 15,000 g. You sweat more when skiing fast, so higher values pay off; models with DERMIZAX™ and TERATEX® 30000 have 30,000 g.
  • Warmth – for jackets and trousers it is almost always the level down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. How warm you actually feel also depends on the wind, your pace and the layers under the jacket.
  • Taped seams and waterproof zips – most jackets and trousers have them. They seal the places where water could seep in even with a good membrane.
  • Jacket features – most jackets have a snow skirt (an elastic band inside the jacket that keeps snow out), as well as a ski pass pocket, a goggle pocket, a detachable hood and ventilation zips.
  • Trouser features – most trousers have inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip, which pull over the ski boot, and detachable braces.
  • Fit – most models have a Regular fit, which leaves room for layers under the jacket; only some have the close-fitting Slim fit or the looser Oversized.

Technologies and materials

TERATEX® 20000 Membrane Core

Perfect membrane fabric excels in extreme level of waterproofing and breathability. The uncompromising features of the material and durable water repellency protects easily against extreme weather conditions. The intelligent breathability feature offers comfortable heat circulation in any weather. The product made of this fabric is designed for very demanding outdoor activities and all extreme sports activities.

DERMIZAX ®

Dermizax™ is the original Japanese waterproof and breathable fabric technology from Toray and uses decades of experience to manage every part of the construction process. Dermizax™ is a fabric with a highly sophisticated and technical membrane that achieves the highest level of waterproofness, breathability and resistance to condensation. The fabric is stretchable, adaptable and flexible. This makes it ideal for sporting activities that take place in extreme environmental conditions, such as mountain climbing, trail running and winter sports. Whatever sport you choose, Dermizax™ can adapt and protect you from the worst that nature can throw at it while you remain comfortable and in control.

FURTHERM®

Breathable thermal imsulation. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In bad weather conditions accumulates body heat and releasing it back in need, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, microbrushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and outstanding comfort. On shell side is very smooth and nice to touch, it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against the windchills.

TECNOPOLAR® fleece

Lightweight, warm, super fine micro brushed fabric with wonderful handfeel offers high heat isolation and windchill protection.

Frequently asked questions

What clothing should I take for my first time skiing?

The basics are enough: a base layer, a thin mid-layer or fleece, a ski jacket and ski trousers with a membrane, plus gloves and a hat or headband. Beginners sit and fall in the snow a lot, so for trousers look at the water column and choose at least 15,000 mm. NORDBLANC ski jackets and trousers have 8,000–30,000 mm, and almost all are rated down to −20 °C (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale). Don’t wear a cotton T-shirt on the slopes: it holds moisture and chills you in the frost.

What should I wear for snowboarding?

Wear the same three layers as for skiing – a base layer, a powerfleece jacket, and a waterproof jacket with trousers – but with more emphasis on durability. On a board you sit and fall in the snow a lot, so choose trousers with a water column of 20,000 mm or more. NORDBLANC snowboard anoraks, which pull on over the head and fit more loosely, are a good choice, as are jackets labelled ski and snowboard.

What gloves, hat and neck warmer should I take skiing?

For the slopes choose insulated ski gloves; most NORDBLANC ski gloves have THERMOLITE® insulation. Powerfleece, fleece or knitted gloves suit warmer days and everyday wear. A knitted hat or headband, mostly in acrylic, some with a touch of wool, keeps your head warm, while a neck warmer with TECNOPOLAR® fleece protects your neck.

How can I avoid sweating and overheating when skiing?

Dress so that you feel slightly cool at the start on the slope – you warm up on your own as you ski. Choose breathable ski clothing with ventilation zips, which most NORDBLANC ski jackets have, and a base layer with DRYFOR fibre underneath to wick sweat away from your body. If you start to sweat, open the zips or take off the mid-layer, so the sweat doesn’t dry on your body. The breathability of ski jackets and trousers is most often 15,000 g/m²/24 h, at most 30,000 g.
