How to layer clothing for your activity

For the mountains, the slopes and cross-country skiing, layering works best. Each layer has a different job, and when the weather or your pace changes, you add or take one off. The same applies to your upper body and your legs.

  • Thermal underwear (base layer) – fits close to the body and wicks away sweat. NORDBLANC men’s thermal underwear in polyester with DRYFOR technical fibre comes in winter, all-season and lightweight versions; a thermal top and long johns are made from pure merino wool.
  • Fleece or gilet (mid-layer) – keeps you warm and lets moisture from the base layer escape outwards. Powerfleece jackets are stretchy, fleece jackets light and warm; an insulated gilet keeps your core warm and leaves your arms free.
  • Jacket and trousers (outer layer) – keep out wind, rain and snow. Waterproof models have a TERATEX® or DERMIZAX™ membrane, while stretchy, breathable SOFTSHIELD® softshell suits active movement.

For the mountains and hiking

For hiking, one simple rule applies: light layers that you can take off and stow in your backpack. Combine a technical T-shirt or lightweight base layer with a fleece or powerfleece jacket, and pack a waterproof outdoor jacket with a TERATEX® membrane (15,000–20,000 mm). Choose trousers by season – lightweight outdoor trousers in summer, softshell trousers in spring and autumn, insulated trousers in winter.

For skiing and snowboarding

Start with winter base layers, and in freezing weather add a thin fleece jacket or gilet. Men’s ski jackets with a TERATEX® membrane have a water column of 10,000–20,000 mm, models with DERMIZAX™ 30,000 mm; almost all are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. Pair them with ski trousers, which mostly have a water column of 15,000–30,000 mm and all come with detachable braces.

For cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing is an endurance sport, and you sweat even in freezing temperatures. So dress one layer lighter than for the slopes and focus above all on moisture wicking. Between a technical base layer and a light sports or softshell jacket to block the wind, you only need one warm layer: a stretchy powerfleece jacket or a gilet with an insulated front panel. On your legs, multisport softshell trousers with stretchy POWERFLEECE fabric work well.

For the city and everyday wear

For the city in winter, a winter jacket or coat with FURTHERM insulation is enough, with a cotton sweatshirt or flannel shirt underneath. On warm days, reach for cotton T-shirts, casual trousers and shorts, and swim shorts for the water. Gloves, hats and shoes complete the outfit.

What to look for

  • Rain and snow – the water column tells you how waterproof a garment is. A fabric with 5,000 mm only repels water and is enough for a short shower; from 10,000 mm, a jacket or trousers will handle rain and wet snow in everyday wear, and for all-day skiing and persistent rain, 15,000 mm or more is worth it.
  • Pace – walking fast uphill, running or cross-country skiing makes you sweat, so the breathability of the jacket and of the technical layer beneath it is what counts. For a slow walk, riding the chairlift or waiting around in the cold, rely more on insulation and greater warmth.
  • Temperature – the warmth of insulated jackets, trousers and gilets is shown on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, from ‘down to 0 °C’ to ‘down to −30 °C and below’. The scale is for comparing models; how warm you feel also depends on how much you move.
  • Material – polyester with a technical fibre and merino wool wick sweat well, which makes them the right choice for sport. Save cotton T-shirts and sweatshirts for the city: they get damp when you exert yourself and then feel cold when it’s chilly.

Technologies and materials

TERATEX® 20000 Membrane Core

Perfect membrane fabric excels in extreme level of waterproofing and breathability. The uncompromising features of the material and durable water repellency protects easily against extreme weather conditions. The intelligent breathability feature offers comfortable heat circulation in any weather. The product made of this fabric is designed for very demanding outdoor activities and all extreme sports activities.

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

FURTHERM®

Breathable thermal imsulation. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In bad weather conditions accumulates body heat and releasing it back in need, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for high demanding outdoor activities. Main advantage is elasticity, heat insulation, great windproofness, waterproofness and perfect breathability. The material consists of a three laminated layers. Carefully combining the most compatible layers, we created light, elastic and soft fabric with excellent thermal insulation.

DERMIZAX ®

Dermizax™ is the original Japanese waterproof and breathable fabric technology from Toray and uses decades of experience to manage every part of the construction process. Dermizax™ is a fabric with a highly sophisticated and technical membrane that achieves the highest level of waterproofness, breathability and resistance to condensation. The fabric is stretchable, adaptable and flexible. This makes it ideal for sporting activities that take place in extreme environmental conditions, such as mountain climbing, trail running and winter sports. Whatever sport you choose, Dermizax™ can adapt and protect you from the worst that nature can throw at it while you remain comfortable and in control.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, microbrushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and outstanding comfort. On shell side is very smooth and nice to touch, it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against the windchills.

Frequently asked questions

How should men dress for the mountains in winter?

Go for layers you can add or take off during the day. Next to the skin, wear a polyester base layer with DRYFOR fibre or one in merino wool; over it, a fleece or powerfleece jacket or an insulated gilet; and on top, a waterproof jacket and trousers. For the slopes, choose ski clothing rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale; for winter hikes, a lighter, more breathable combination. Leave cotton at home: once you sweat, it stays damp and chills you in the cold.

What should men wear for cross-country skiing?

Dress lighter than for the slopes – cross-country skiing warms you up quickly, and you sweat even in freezing weather. Start with a technical base layer that moves sweat away from your skin fast. Add warmth to suit the weather with a stretchy powerfleece jacket or a Nordic gilet, keep the wind out with a thin sports jacket, and wear multisport softshell trousers, most of them with a POWERFLEECE back panel. Pack a warmer layer in your backpack for breaks and the way back.

What do the numbers in TERATEX® 10000 or SOFTSHIELD® 10000 mean?

The number is the water column in millimetres: the higher it is, the more water pressure the fabric holds back before it starts to let water through. TERATEX® is NORDBLANC’s own branded range of membrane fabrics with a water column of 5,000–30,000 mm: TERATEX® 10000 has 10,000 mm, TERATEX® 20000 has 20,000 mm, and the 5000 version is only water-repellent. For SOFTSHIELD® 10000, a stretchy three-layer softshell, the number also means 10,000 mm, with a breathability of 10,000 g/m²/24 h. The DERMIZAX™ membrane, used in some ski jackets and trousers, has 30,000 mm.

What sizes does NORDBLANC men’s clothing come in?

NORDBLANC men’s clothing almost always comes in sizes S–XXXL, and some models (mainly thermal underwear and shorts) also in XS. Most products have a size chart with measurements on the product page – compare it with your own measurements or with clothes that fit you well. If you wear extra layers under a jacket or trousers, allow some room so that nothing feels tight when you move.
