How to choose women’s softshell trousers for your activity

Softshell combines stretch and breathability with protection from the wind; with a membrane, it also handles light rain and snow. Most NORDBLANC women’s softshell trousers are made of three-layer SOFTSHIELD® 10000 with a water column of 10,000 mm, and some models have a TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane with 20,000 mm. Choose according to how fast you’ll be moving and how cold it will be outside.

For winter hikes and walks

Winter softshell trousers are insulated with microfleece and rated down to −10 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. They have a looser Regular fit, leg adjusters and reflective details, which you’ll appreciate when heading home at dusk.

For cross-country skiing and winter cycling

Multisport softshell trousers are built mainly for cross-country skiing. Most are close-fitting and combine insulated softshell at the front with very stretchy POWERFLEECE fabric at the back. They are rated down to −10 °C or −20 °C and have reflective details and hem zips that you can open to suit your boots; some models have a TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane with a water column of 20,000 mm.

For running and sport in bad weather

How to read the specifications of women’s softshell trousers

SOFTSHIELD® 10000 – a three-layer membrane fabric; the number in the name is the water column of 10,000 mm, and the breathability is also 10,000 g/m²/24 h. It is stretchy, protects you from the wind and handles light rain and wet snow.
Water column – 10,000 mm is enough for normal rain and snow while you’re on the move. For persistent rain or a whole day on the slopes, choose trousers with 20,000 mm and taped seams.
Warmth – on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, most insulated softshell trousers are rated down to −10 °C, some multisport models and the softshell ski trousers down to −20 °C, and the softshell joggers down to 0 °C.
Fleece and POWERFLEECE – fleece on the inside of the softshell keeps you warm and feels pleasant on the skin. POWERFLEECE is a light, very stretchy fabric, brushed on the inside, that keeps you warm without holding you back.
Fit – Regular is looser; Slim fit hugs the body, so nothing flaps about when cross-country skiing or running. Most multisport trousers for cross-country skiing are close-fitting; with leggings, it depends on the model.
Features – most models have reflective details, and roughly half have hem zips and waterproof zips; the leggings and multisport trousers often also have a small back pocket.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, microbrushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and outstanding comfort. On shell side is very smooth and nice to touch, it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against the windchills.

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

TERATEX® 20000ELP Membrane Core

ELP marked membranes are specifically optimized for female needs of temperature regulation. Perfect membrane fabric excels in extreme level of waterproofing and breathability. Frequently asked questions

Are women’s softshell trousers warm enough for winter?

The insulated ones are warm enough: with fleece on the inside, they are mostly rated down to −10 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, and some multisport models down to −20 °C. They are best suited to winter hikes, walks and cross-country skiing, when you’re on the move. For standing in the cold for long periods or a full day on the slopes, choose insulated ski trousers, or wear thermal underwear under your softshells.

Can women’s softshell trousers handle rain?

Normal rain and wet snow, yes. Almost all NORDBLANC women’s softshell trousers are made of waterproof fabric – most often three-layer SOFTSHIELD® 10000 with a water column of 10,000 mm, and some models have a TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane with 20,000 mm. Only the softshell joggers, which have no membrane, are merely water-repellent. For a whole day in the rain, you’re better off with trousers that have taped seams.

Waterproof leggings or trousers?

Choose leggings for cross-country skiing, running and cycling – the stretchy fabric doesn’t hold you back, and close-fitting leggings don’t flap about. NORDBLANC women’s waterproof leggings usually have a water column of 10,000 mm (some 20,000 mm) and are mostly rated down to −10 °C (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale). For hiking, slower walking and wet snow, looser trousers are more practical, as you can also wear thermal underwear underneath.

How do I care for women’s softshell trousers so they keep repelling water?

Wash them according to the care label at a low temperature, with a detergent for technical fabrics, without fabric softener and with the zips closed. Fabric softener would clog the SOFTSHIELD® 10000 membrane fabric that most models are made of and reduce its water repellency. Dry them laid out loosely away from direct heat, and as soon as the surface starts to soak up water, reproof them with a spray-on or wash-in proofer – for softshell joggers without a membrane, all the protection from water depends on it.
