  • Waterproof winter coats – NORDBLANC men’s winter coats with a TERATEX® membrane, synthetic insulation and a hood. Most models are waterproof with a water column of 10,000–15,000 mm, and all are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale.
  • Waterproof down coats – NORDBLANC men’s down coats filled with 70% down and 30% feathers, with a hood and a water-repellent outer fabric. They are designed for severe cold and are rated down to −30 °C and below on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale.

How to choose a men’s winter coat for your needs

NORDBLANC men’s winter coats belong in the city, at work and on winter walks – for sport and the mountains, there are jackets. When choosing, the deciding factors are the weather (wet snow and sleet, or dry cold) and how long you’ll be outside.

For the city and work

Coats with a TERATEX® membrane and FURTHERM synthetic insulation (one model THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN) are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. On all of them, the hood can be adjusted to your head with a drawcord, and on most it also zips off. You’ll appreciate the inner shoulder straps in a shop, in a restaurant or on the train: you carry the coat on your back like a backpack when you take it off.

For wet snow and rain

The membrane’s water column is what counts. TERATEX® 10000 (10,000 mm) handles normal rain and wet snow, TERATEX® 15000 (15,000 mm) even longer walks in the rain. The model with TERATEX® 5000 only repels water, so it is better suited to dry cold; for persistent rain, choose a higher water column.

For severe cold

For standing outside for long periods – at a bus stop, a market or a stadium – there are down coats filled with 70% down and 30% feathers, rated down to −30 °C and below. Their outer fabric repels water, but no membrane or water column is stated, and when damp, down loses its loft and its ability to keep you warm, so wear them mainly in dry, freezing weather.

How to read the specifications of a men’s winter coat

  • Water column (mm) – for coats with TERATEX®, you can tell it from the number in the name: TERATEX® 10000 has 10,000 mm and handles normal rain, TERATEX® 15000 has 15,000 mm and copes with longer walks in the rain, and TERATEX® 5000 only repels water.
  • Breathability (g/m²/24 h) – how much sweat in the form of vapour the coat lets out; most models with TERATEX® have 10,000–15,000 g/m²/24 h, and a higher value is appreciated mainly by those who walk fast.
  • Warmth – NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale (coats with synthetic insulation down to −20 °C, down-filled coats down to −30 °C and below); if you’ll be standing in the cold for a long time, add a warm layer under the coat.
  • Insulation – synthetic FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN keeps you warm even in sleet; down is warmer per gram, but needs dry conditions.
  • Features – all men’s winter coats have an adjustable drawcord hood, an inner chest pocket and inner elastic cuffs in the sleeves that keep out wind and snow.
  • Fit – Regular (classic, not close-fitting) on all models.

How to wash a men’s winter coat

Wash a coat with synthetic insulation according to the care label on a gentle cycle, with a liquid detergent, without fabric softener and with the zips closed. Dry it on a hanger away from direct heat. For a down coat, use a down wash; if the label allows tumble-drying, dry it on a low heat with a few dryer balls, which fluff up the down and restore its loft. Once water starts to soak in, reproofing will restore the outer fabric’s water repellency.

Technologies and materials

TERATEX® 10000 Core

The medium level of NORDBLANC's top-of-the-line fabrics. Waterproof fabric that repels water from the surface of the fabric, while it offers the necessary waterproofness, breathability and wind protection. The product made of this farbic is suitable for everyday sports and everyday use.

FURTHERM®

Breathable thermal imsulation. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In bad weather conditions accumulates body heat and releasing it back in need, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

TERATEX® 15000 Membrane Core

Durable membrane fabric, which is highly waterproof and breathable. Easily protects against unpredictable weather. Eliminates the windchills and excels in water repellency. The product from this fabric is suitable for all challenging and extreme sports activities.

THERMOLITE® ECOMADE T-DOWN

THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN technology is made from 100% recycled PET bottles. This 500 fill power synthetic insulation offers several advantages over down: higher loft, better moisture resistance, warmer when wet, and dries faster. This technology is also breathable, soft and lofty with an excellent hand, and offers high compressibility (packable) with rapid recovery power.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a men’s winter coat?

Start with the weather: for wet snow and rain, choose a coat with a TERATEX® membrane (10,000 or 15,000 mm); for dry, severe cold, a down coat. Coats with synthetic insulation are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, down coats down to −30 °C and below. All NORDBLANC men’s winter coats have an adjustable drawcord hood and inner shoulder straps for carrying the coat when you take it off.

Which men’s winter coat is rated down to −20 °C?

All men’s winter coats with a TERATEX® membrane and FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN synthetic insulation – that is, most of the range – are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. That level is enough for getting around town; for standing outside in severe cold for long periods, choose a down coat rated down to −30 °C and below. Everyone feels the cold differently, so in freezing weather add a base layer or a sweater under the coat.

How long should a men’s hooded winter coat be?

For walking around town and winter strolls, choose a coat that covers your hips and seat – in freezing, windy weather, it keeps you warmer than a short jacket; if you drive a lot, you’ll probably prefer a shorter length. All NORDBLANC men’s winter coats have an adjustable drawcord hood, and on most models it zips off, so you can remove it in dry weather. All have a classic Regular fit and inner elastic cuffs in the sleeves to keep the wind out.

Men’s down coat or synthetic-insulated coat?

Choose a down coat for dry, severe cold and long periods standing outside: NORDBLANC men’s down coats are filled with 70% down and 30% feathers and are rated down to −30 °C and below (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale). For city wear in sleet, FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® synthetic insulation is more practical, as it keeps you warm even when damp; these coats are rated down to −20 °C, and most have a waterproof TERATEX® membrane (10,000–15,000 mm). Down loses its loft when damp, and no membrane is stated for the down coats.
