How to choose a women’s coat for your needs

You’ll wear NORDBLANC women’s coats and parkas mainly in the city, on walks and when travelling; most spring and autumn models can also come along on easy hikes. What matters is the season and the weather: how cold it will be and how much rain or wet snow you expect.

For winter in the city

For dry cold in the city, a Classic winter coat with FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN synthetic insulation is enough. Most have no membrane and are rated down to −10 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, a few models down to −20 °C. You can choose quilted and longer cuts, and most models have a hood; coats without a membrane aren’t suitable for persistent rain, though.

For wet snow and rain in winter

Winter coats with a TERATEX® ELP membrane (10,000–15,000 mm) are waterproof, have synthetic insulation and are rated down to −20 °C. All have an adjustable drawcord hood and inner shoulder straps for carrying the coat on your back when you take it off. Coats with TERATEX® 5000 only repel water: they can handle snow and a short spell of rain, but not all-day rain.

For severe cold

The highest warmth level, down to −30 °C and below, belongs to the down coat (70% down, 30% feathers) with a detachable hood and a drawcord waist. Damp down keeps you less warm, so it is best suited to dry, freezing weather.

For spring and autumn

Softshell coats in three-layer SOFTSHIELD® with a water column of 10,000 mm are stretchy, breathable and protect you from the wind. The lightweight models are for warmer days; the insulated, fleece-lined ones are mostly rated down to −10 °C. Sweater-look softshell coats with SOFTSHIELD® 5000 are water-repellent and best suited to the city.

For rain and day trips

Lightweight waterproof coats and parkas have a TERATEX® ELP membrane with a water column of 10,000–15,000 mm, a hood and a mesh lining, and most also have taped seams and waterproof zips. They are uninsulated, so you wear a sweatshirt underneath depending on the weather. They are suitable for the city and easy hikes.

How to read the specifications of a women’s coat

Water column (mm) – as a guide, 10,000 mm handles normal rain and wet snow, and 15,000 mm more persistent rain; 5,000 mm means a water-repellent fabric only, for a short shower.
Taped seams and waterproof zips – on a raincoat, they are as important as the membrane, because water most often gets in through the seams and the zip. Most lightweight waterproof coats and parkas for spring and autumn have them.
Warmth – NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale; women’s winter coats are rated down to −10 °C or down to −20 °C, the down coat down to −30 °C and below. Most lightweight spring and autumn coats have no stated warmth level.
Insulation – synthetic FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN predominates in winter coats: it copes with damp and dries quickly, while down is better suited to dry cold.
Hood – most coats have an adjustable drawcord hood; on some winter models it zips off.
Fit – almost all coats have a classic Regular fit, and some winter models a longer cut.

The product made of this fabric is suitable for everyday sports and everyday use.

TERATEX® 15000ELP Membrane Core

ELP marked membranes are specifically optimized for female needs of temperature regulation. Durable membrane fabric, which is highly waterproof and breathable. Easily protects against unpredictable weather. Eliminates the wind chills and excels in water repellency. The product from this fabric is suitable for all challenging and extreme sports activities.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for high demanding outdoor activities. Main advantage is elasticity, heat insulation, great windproofness, waterproofness and perfect breathability. The material consists of a three laminated layers. Carefully combining the most compatible layers, we created light, elastic and soft fabric with excellent thermal insulation.

THERMOLITE® ECOMADE T-DOWN

THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN technology is made from 100% recycled PET bottles. This 500 fill power synthetic insulation offers several advantages over down: higher loft, better moisture resistance, warmer when wet, and dries faster. This technology is also breathable, soft and lofty with an excellent hand, and offers high compressibility (packable) with rapid recovery power.

Frequently asked questions

When should I wear a women’s coat and when a jacket?

Wear a coat for the city, work and walks: it is longer and covers your hips and seat better, so it keeps you warmer in winter. Choose a jacket for skiing, hiking and sport, where you need freedom of movement. Good compromises are the women’s SOFTSHIELD® softshell coats, which are as stretchy as a softshell jacket but longer, and the lightweight waterproof parkas for spring and autumn, which you can also take on easy hikes.

Which women’s parka should I choose for spring, autumn and winter?

For spring and autumn, there are lightweight waterproof parkas with a TERATEX® 15000 ELP membrane (15,000 mm), a hood, taped seams and waterproof zips; they are uninsulated, so you add a sweatshirt underneath depending on the weather. For winter, choose a winter coat with a TERATEX® ELP membrane – mostly in a hooded parka style, with synthetic insulation and rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. A parka differs from a classic coat mainly in its hood and sportier cut; a coat tends to be longer.

What women’s coat should I wear in the rain?

For rain, choose a coat with a membrane and a water column of at least 10,000 mm. For spring and autumn, there are lightweight waterproof coats and parkas with a TERATEX® membrane (10,000–15,000 mm), mostly with taped seams and waterproof zips; for winter, waterproof winter coats with a TERATEX® ELP membrane (10,000–15,000 mm). Models with TERATEX® 5000 or SOFTSHIELD® 5000 are only water-repellent and suitable for a short shower.

Is a softshell coat waterproof?

It depends on the fabric. Women’s softshell coats made of three-layer SOFTSHIELD® have a water column of 10,000 mm and handle normal rain, while the sweater-look softshell coats with SOFTSHIELD® 5000 are only water-repellent and can handle a short shower. Above all, softshell stretches, breathes and protects you from the wind; for all-day rain, a coat with a TERATEX® membrane and taped seams is more reliable.

Which women’s coat for autumn and spring?

For changeable weather, a SOFTSHIELD® softshell coat with a water column of 10,000 mm works well – a lightweight spring one, or an insulated one with fleece, mostly rated down to −10 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale.
