  • Waterproof down coats – NORDBLANC women’s down coats for dry, severe cold: rated down to −30 °C and below on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. The fill is 70% down and 30% feathers, the hood is detachable and the waist has a drawcord.

How to choose a women’s winter coat for your needs

A NORDBLANC women’s winter coat is for every day: for work, the city and winter walks. Choose according to the weather you’ll wear it in most often and how long you’ll be outside.

For dry cold in the city

Classic coats are for the city and dry cold: they are insulated with FURTHERM hollow polyester fibre or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN synthetic fill, and most have no membrane. Most are rated down to −10 °C, the longer models with side zips down to −20 °C (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale). You can also choose quilted coats or hooded models; they can handle a short shower but aren’t made for persistent rain.

For wet snow and rain

Coats with a TERATEX® ELP membrane and a water column of 10,000 or 15,000 mm are waterproof and rated down to −20 °C. They have a drawcord hood, detachable on some models, and inner shoulder straps, so you don’t have to carry the coat in your hand when you take it off. Some models have TERATEX® 5000 and are only water-repellent; for all-day rain, choose a higher water column.

For severe cold

For the hardest frosts, there is the down coat, filled with 70% down and 30% feathers and rated down to −30 °C and below; the hood is detachable and the waist has a drawcord. The outer fabric repels water, but no membrane or water column is stated, and damp down loses its loft – so the coat is mainly for dry cold.

For the mountains and skiing

For the slopes, a shorter ski jacket is more practical. In this category, you’ll also find a winter and ski jacket with a TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane (20,000 mm), a ski pass pocket and a snow skirt, which you can also wear in the city.

How to read the specifications of a women’s winter coat

  • Water column (mm) – the waterproof coats with TERATEX® ELP have 10,000 or 15,000 mm, the coats with TERATEX® 5000, which only repel water, 5,000 mm; no water column is stated for the Classic coats without a membrane or for the down coat.
  • Warmth – every winter coat shows its level on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale; if you stand outside for long periods in winter or tend to feel the cold, choose one level higher.
  • Insulation – most often FURTHERM hollow polyester fibre, in a few models THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN; both synthetic insulations dry quickly and keep you warmer than down when damp.
  • Hood – most models have one. You adjust it to your head with the drawcord, and you can remove a detachable hood when you don’t need it.
  • Inner features – inner elastic cuffs in the sleeves keep out wind and snow; the waterproof models also have an inner chest pocket and shoulder straps.
  • Length and fastening – all coats have a Regular fit, some a longer cut; a two-way zip, which only some models have, also opens from the bottom, making it easier to walk and sit in the coat.

How to wash a women’s winter coat

Close all the zips before washing and follow the care label: wash synthetic insulation on a gentle cycle with a liquid detergent and without fabric softener, which reduces breathability. Dry the coat on a hanger, not on a radiator. A down coat needs a down wash and tumble-drying on a low heat with dryer balls, if the label allows it. You can restore the surface’s water repellency by reproofing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a women’s winter coat?

Mainly by the weather: for wet snow and rain, choose a waterproof coat with a TERATEX® ELP membrane (10,000–15,000 mm); for dry cold in the city, a Classic coat with synthetic insulation is enough. On NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, most women’s winter coats are rated down to −20 °C, most Classic coats down to −10 °C and the down coat down to −30 °C and below. Also consider the hood, which most models have, and the length – some coats have a longer cut.

Do women’s winter coats have a hood and a longer cut?

Most NORDBLANC women’s winter coats have a hood that you can adjust to your head with a drawcord, and on some models it also zips off. Some coats have a longer cut with side zips, others a two-way zip that makes walking and sitting easier. You’ll appreciate a longer cut especially when waiting at a bus stop or walking in the wind.

Which women’s winter coat is warm enough for −20 °C?

Most women’s winter coats are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale: all those with a TERATEX® membrane and some longer-cut Classic coats. The other Classic coats without a membrane are rated down to −10 °C, the down coat down to −30 °C and below. For standing in the cold for long periods, a higher level or a base layer under your coat is worth it.

When should I choose a women’s down coat and when a synthetic one?

The NORDBLANC women’s down coat is suited to dry, severe cold: it is filled with 70% down and 30% feathers, has a detachable hood and is rated down to −30 °C and below on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. For a city where frost alternates with sleet, synthetic insulation is more practical – FURTHERM and THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN keep you warm even when damp, dry quickly and are easy to wash; women’s coats with them are rated down to −10 °C or −20 °C. Wet down keeps you significantly less warm.
