How to choose a men’s ski jacket for the conditions

NORDBLANC ski jackets are waterproof and insulated, almost all rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. So when choosing a ski jacket, the main factors are the membrane’s water column, breathability and fit – choose according to the weather you ski in and how hard you ski.

Recreational skiing and everyday wear

Winter and ski jackets with a TERATEX® membrane (10,000 mm) have a snow skirt, and most also a ski pass pocket and a detachable hood. They are enough for skiing in good weather, and because they are also made for everyday wear, you’ll make use of them all winter.

Full days on the slopes, snowfall and wet snow

The largest group of models has a TERATEX® membrane with a water column of 20,000 mm (some 15,000 mm) and FURTHERM insulation. Almost all have a snow skirt and a ski pass pocket, and most also have taped seams, waterproof zips and ventilation zips that let you cool down quickly when you’re working hard.

The toughest conditions

Jackets with a DERMIZAX™ membrane offer the greatest margin: a water column of 30,000 mm and a breathability of 20,000–30,000 g/m²/24 h. They are insulated with THERMOLITE® synthetic fill, and all have taped seams, waterproof and ventilation zips and a snow skirt.

Snowboarding and the mountains

Snowboard jackets and anoraks protect you just like ski jackets – with a TERATEX® (15,000–20,000 mm) or DERMIZAX™ (30,000 mm) membrane – and differ mainly in cut: anoraks are looser (Oversized), the other models have a Regular fit. For the mountains and the slopes, a 3-in-1 jacket with a detachable fleece layer is also a good option.

How to read a ski jacket’s specifications

  • Water column (mm) – expresses how well the fabric resists water pressure; with TERATEX®, you’ll find it right in the name (TERATEX® 20000 = 20,000 mm). Men’s ski jackets have 10,000–30,000 mm.
  • Breathability (g/m²/24 h) – the amount of water vapour the fabric lets through in 24 hours. Men’s ski jackets have 8,000–30,000 g; if you ski hard or climb uphill, you’ll appreciate 15,000 g or more.
  • Taped seams and waterproof zips – stop water getting in through the seams and zips. Most models have taped seams, and the vast majority have waterproof zips.
  • Snow skirt (powder skirt) – an elastic band inside the jacket that keeps snow from getting underneath and stops cold air blowing in from below. Almost all models have one.
  • Ventilation zips – zipped vents that let you cool down quickly when you’re working hard; most models have them.
  • Pockets – most jackets have a ski pass pocket on the sleeve, and roughly two-thirds of models an inner mesh goggle pocket.

How to care for a ski jacket

Wash it according to the care label on a gentle cycle, with a detergent for technical fabrics and without fabric softener, which reduces the membrane’s breathability. Hang it up loosely to dry, away from direct sunlight and not in direct contact with a radiator. When water stops beading on the surface, reproof it with a spray-on or wash-in proofer.

Frequently asked questions

How breathable should a men’s ski jacket be?

For relaxed skiing, around 10,000 g/m²/24 h is usually enough; for hard skiing, full days on the slopes or uphill climbs, 15,000 g or more is worth it. NORDBLANC men’s ski jackets with a TERATEX® membrane (15,000–20,000 mm) have a breathability of 15,000–20,000 g, jackets with a DERMIZAX™ membrane 20,000–30,000 g. When you’re working hard, ventilation zips help too – most models have them. Compare values from different brands with care, as manufacturers measure them using different methods.

What’s the difference between the TERATEX® and DERMIZAX™ membranes?

The main difference is the water column. TERATEX® is NORDBLANC’s own branded range of membrane fabrics, and the number in the name gives the water column – men’s ski jackets with it have 10,000–20,000 mm and mostly FURTHERM insulation. Jackets with DERMIZAX™ have 30,000 mm, plus a breathability of up to 30,000 g/m²/24 h and THERMOLITE® insulation. TERATEX® is enough for normal skiing; if you spend whole days on the slopes in all weathers, you’ll appreciate the greater margin that DERMIZAX™ offers.

Men’s ski jacket or snowboard jacket?

They offer the same protection; the difference is mainly in the cut. Like the ski jackets, NORDBLANC men’s snowboard jackets and anoraks have a TERATEX® (15,000–20,000 mm) or DERMIZAX™ (30,000 mm) membrane and a snow skirt, and are rated down to −20 °C (NORDBLANC warmth scale). An anorak goes on over your head and is looser (Oversized); the other snowboard and ski jackets have a Regular fit – both work on skis and on a board.

What’s the difference between a ski jacket and a winter jacket?

A ski jacket is built for snow and movement: NORDBLANC men’s ski jackets are made of waterproof fabric with a water column of 10,000–30,000 mm, almost all have a snow skirt, and most also have a ski pass pocket, ventilation zips and taped seams. A winter jacket is mainly for everyday wear – either quilted and insulated without a membrane, or waterproof with a TERATEX® membrane. So for regular skiing, choose a ski jacket; for the city, a winter jacket.

What should I wear under a ski jacket?

Dress in layers: a technical base layer that wicks sweat next to the skin, a thin sweatshirt or fleece over it, and an insulated ski jacket on top. Almost all NORDBLANC men’s ski jackets are rated down to −20 °C (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale), so in light frost a base layer and one thin layer are enough; in severe cold, add a warmer fleece or gilet. Don’t wear a cotton T-shirt for skiing – it soaks up sweat and chills you.
