How to choose a women’s sweatshirt for your needs

You’ll most often wear a sweatshirt as a mid-layer between a technical T-shirt and a jacket, and in dry weather on its own too. Choose according to how much you’ll be moving and whether you want it mainly for sport or for every day.

Under a jacket and for hiking: a lightweight fleece jacket

Lightweight fleece jackets are made of finely brushed TECNOPOLAR® polyester microfleece, which is light, warm and pleasant to the touch. In winter, you wear them under a ski or winter jacket; in spring and autumn, on their own for day trips and in the city. Some models have reflective details.

For cross-country skiing, running and cycling: a powerfleece jacket

Powerfleece jackets are made of POWERFLEECE with added elastane: it is very stretchy, brushed on the inside so it keeps you warm, and smooth on the outside. DRYFOR technical fibre carries sweat to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates quickly. The jacket doesn’t restrict your movement, so it suits cross-country skiing, running, cycling and hiking in cooler weather – and, thanks to its comfort, everyday wear too.

For cool days without rain: a softshell sweatshirt

A softshell sweatshirt made of SOFTSHIELD® has a durable surface and warm fleece inside. It has no membrane, so it only repels water – for rain, choose a jacket. It is rated down to 0 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale and is worn as an outer layer or as a mid-layer under a jacket; some models have a drawcord hood.

For every day: a cotton sweatshirt and a flannel shirt

Cotton sweatshirts are mostly cotton (60–80%) with added polyester and have a finely brushed inner surface that feels pleasantly warm. For sport that makes you sweat, though, a technical top is better, because cotton holds moisture. A flannel shirt in 100% cotton is a light layer for in-between days: buttoned up as a shirt, or open over a T-shirt.

Sherpa jackets and fleece sweaters

Sherpa jackets are made of a warm fleece that feels similar to wool. When it isn’t raining, they serve as an outer layer in spring and autumn, and in winter as a warm mid-layer under a jacket. Fleece sweaters look knitted on the outside, but are softly brushed like fleece on the inside.

How to choose the right material

  • TECNOPOLAR® fleece – a light, finely brushed polyester that insulates well and is pleasant to the touch. An ideal mid-layer under a jacket.
  • POWERFLEECE – a very stretchy fabric, brushed on the inside for better insulation and smooth on the outside. It doesn’t hold you back, which makes it suitable for sport.
  • SOFTSHIELD® – a softshell fabric; the sweatshirts made of it have a durable surface and fleece inside, but no membrane, so they only repel water.
  • DRYFOR – a technical fibre that carries sweat away from your body to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates quickly.
  • Cotton – soft and pleasant on the skin, but it holds moisture, so it is less suitable for sport.
  • Elastane – an addition of 4–12% gives a sweatshirt its stretch; the powerfleece and softshell tops and some fleece jackets have it.
  • Fit – the softshell sweatshirts have a classic Regular fit; one cotton sweatshirt model and one sherpa jacket have a looser Oversized fit.

How to care for sweatshirts

Wash fleece, powerfleece and softshell tops according to the care label at a low temperature, inside out and with the zip done up. Leave out fabric softener – it sticks to the fibres and impairs sweat wicking. Let them dry laid out flat, away from radiators. Wash cotton sweatshirts and flannel shirts with similar colours.

Technologies and materials

TECNOPOLAR® fleece

Lightweight, warm, super fine micro brushed fabric with wonderful handfeel offers high heat isolation and windchill protection.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, microbrushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and outstanding comfort. On shell side is very smooth and nice to touch, it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against the windchills.

SOFTSHIELD®

SOFTSHIELD® is a soft, flexible material perfectly suited to outdoor activities thanks to its properties and elasticity. You'll love its reliable water resistance, breathability, and exceptional wind resistance.

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a women’s fleece jacket, powerfleece jacket and softshell sweatshirt?

A fleece jacket in TECNOPOLAR® microfleece is light and warm and works best as a mid-layer under a jacket. A powerfleece jacket is very stretchy thanks to elastane and wicks sweat with DRYFOR technical fibre, so it is designed for sport – cross-country skiing, running and cycling. A softshell sweatshirt has a durable surface and fleece inside, but no membrane, so it isn’t enough for rain.

Can I wear a women’s softshell sweatshirt in the rain?

Better not: NORDBLANC softshell sweatshirts have no membrane and only repel water, so they can handle a short shower at most. They are suited to cool days without rain as an outer layer or a warm mid-layer, and are rated down to 0 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. For rain, a SOFTSHIELD® 10000 softshell jacket with a water column of 10,000 mm or a jacket with a TERATEX® membrane is a better choice.

What women’s mid-layer should I wear under a ski or winter jacket?

Under a jacket, a lightweight TECNOPOLAR® microfleece jacket, which keeps you nicely warm, works best. For cross-country skiing and active sport, choose a stretchy powerfleece jacket with DRYFOR technical fibre, which wicks sweat. Keep cotton sweatshirts for the city – they hold on to the moisture from sweat and then chill you under a jacket.

How do I wash a women’s fleece jacket?

Follow the care label – fleece is usually washed on a gentle cycle at 30 °C. Turn the jacket inside out and do up the zip so that it pills less. Use a liquid detergent without fabric softener – softener coats the fibres, and the fleece then wicks sweat less well. Spin it only at a low speed and let it air-dry, not on a radiator.
