How to choose women’s trousers for your activity

Before you start choosing, think about where and at what pace you’ll wear the trousers. When you’re moving fast, stretch and breathability are what count; when standing or sitting in the cold and snow for long periods, waterproofness and insulation. Most NORDBLANC women’s trousers are made of stretchy fabric that doesn’t hold you back.

For skiing and snowboarding

Ski trousers have a waterproof membrane - most models TERATEX® 20000 ELP with a water column of 20,000 mm, the more protective models DERMIZAX™ or TERATEX® 30000 ELP with 30,000 mm. On NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, all are rated down to -20 °C: the classic models are mostly insulated with FURTHERM, the close-fitting softshell ski trousers with fleece. Most have inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip and waterproof zips.

For winter hikes and walks

For freezing weather and wet snow, insulated waterproof trousers in TERATEX® 10000 (10,000 mm) with a fleece lining work well, as do winter softshell trousers in three-layer SOFTSHIELD® 10000 with a microfleece lining. Both types are rated down to -10 °C and have a looser Regular fit.

For cross-country skiing, running and cycling

For fast-paced sport, choose multisport softshell trousers or waterproof leggings - mostly close-fitting, with a water column of 10,000 mm, some models 20,000 mm. Multisport trousers mostly combine insulated softshell with very stretchy POWERFLEECE fabric and have reflective details and zips in the leg hems. Lightweight sports softshell trousers in three-layer SOFTSHIELD® 10000 are good for running, hiking and cycling.

For summer hiking and treks

In warm weather, you’ll appreciate lightweight outdoor trousers and outdoor joggers in a breathable fabric with DRYFOR technical fibre, which absorbs sweat and carries it to the surface of the fabric. For longer hikes and the mountains, there are durable outdoor trousers in double-woven DOUBLE WEAVE fabric. For showers, overtrousers are handy - thanks to the full-length leg zips, you can put them on even with your boots on.

For the city and days off

Casual trousers look like regular everyday trousers but are as comfortable to wear as outdoor ones - you can choose lightweight, cargo and cotton models. For home and relaxing, there are loose-fitting cotton joggers.

How to read the specifications of women’s trousers

Water column (mm) - the higher the number, the more water pressure the fabric can take. Trousers are under the most strain at the seat and knees: 5,000 mm is enough for a short shower, 10,000 mm handles normal rain and wet snow, and 20,000-30,000 mm whole days on the slopes and a wet chairlift seat.
Breathability (g/m²/24 h) - how much sweat in the form of vapour the fabric lets out in a day. For cross-country skiing or walking fast uphill, a higher value is worth it.
Warmth - NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale; for women’s trousers, you’ll find the levels down to 0 °C (for example softshell joggers), down to -10 °C (most insulated softshell and outdoor trousers) and down to -20 °C (ski trousers and some multisport models).
Taped seams and waterproof zips - seams and zips are the weak points of waterproof trousers; seam tape and waterproof zips stop water seeping through them. Most classic ski trousers have taped seams.
Inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip - an inner cuff that you pull over your ski boot so that snow can’t get into your boots and trousers.
Fit - most trousers have a looser Regular fit; the softshell ski trousers and most multisport models for cross-country skiing have a close-fitting Slim fit.

How to care for technical trousers

Wash technical trousers gently according to the care label, with a detergent for technical fabrics and without fabric softener. Close the zips before washing and dry the trousers laid out loosely away from radiators. As soon as water stops running off at the knees and seat and the fabric gets damp, reproof them - the fabric will then repel water again and breathe better.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for demanding outdoor activities. Its main advantages are elasticity, thermal insulation, excellent wind resistance and water resistance, together with perfect breathability. The material is a three-layer laminate in which a suitable combination of materials produces a light, soft, elastic softshell with excellent thermal insulation.

FURTHERM®

Breathable thermal insulation fill. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In extreme weather conditions it accumulates body heat and releases it back later, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, micro-brushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and comfort. The outside is smooth and very pleasant to the touch, and it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against gusty wind.

DOUBLE WEAVE

Lightweight, durable material that is specifically double-woven. Its main advantage is high strength, durability and elasticity. Provides excellent resistance to windchills. Of course, it is highly breathable and has quick drying DRYFOR finish and UV protection.
