Insulated leggings: how to choose for your pace and the weather

All the insulated leggings on offer are women’s and share the same base: SOFTSHIELD® 10000 softshell with DRYFOR fibre. The range is small, and the models differ mainly in fit and features. So decide by the pace at which you will be moving and the weather you want the leggings for.

Cross-country skiing, winter running and cycling: Regular fit

Regular-fit models have high wind resistance on the NORDBLANC scale, and running, cross-country skiing, cycling and hiking among their listed activities. The elastic waist is wide, and there is a small pocket for small items at the back. Regular is looser, which helps if you plan to wear another layer under the leggings.

Fast movement at dusk: Slim fit

The close-fitting Slim fit models have reflective details and a back pocket, and are listed for running, hiking and cycling. The NORDBLANC scale gives no wind resistance rating for them, and cross-country skiing is not among their activities. They suit brisk movement where nothing must flap.

Hikes in the cold and wet snow

Walking in winter, you will appreciate the Waterproof level and the 10,000 mm water column: the leggings can handle ordinary rain and wet snow. The warmth comes from an insulating layer inside the material, not from fill. Skiing is not among their listed activities; ski trousers are the right choice for the piste. They are built for movement, so add another layer if you stand around in the frost for longer.

How to read the specifications of insulated leggings

Water column and breathability - SOFTSHIELD® 10000 is a three-layer laminate with a 10,000 mm water column and breathability of 10,000 g/m²/24 h. The features list waterproof material but not taped seams, so they may not be enough for all-day persistent rain.
Warmth - on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, all models are rated down to -10 °C. The number is an indicative aid for choosing, not a measured value.
Wind resistance - the NORDBLANC scale distinguishes low, medium and high. Regular models have high; for Slim fit the figure is missing, so choose Regular for windy ridges and sharp wind.
Composition - 88% polyester and 12% elastane. The elastane gives stretch so the leggings do not restrict your stride, and DRYFOR fibre carries sweat from the skin to the surface of the fabric.
Sizes - 34-44. For each model you will find a size chart and the height of the model in the photo (170-171 cm), from which you can estimate the leg length.
Features - all models have a back pocket, while only some have an elastic waist and reflective details. You can see what each model has in the features on its product page.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for demanding outdoor activities. Its main advantages are elasticity, thermal insulation, excellent wind resistance and water resistance, together with perfect breathability. The material is a three-layer laminate in which a suitable combination of materials produces a light, soft, elastic softshell with excellent thermal insulation.

DRYFOR®

A functional fibre that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

What temperature are insulated leggings warm enough for?

Down to -10 °C, on all models: that is where NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale places insulated leggings. The warmth is held by an insulating layer in the SOFTSHIELD® 10000 material; the leggings have no fill. The number is an indicative aid for choosing, not a measured value, so if you stand around for long in the frost or in a sharp wind, add thermal underwear under the leggings and a jacket on top.

Are insulated leggings waterproof, and will they last a whole day in the rain?

For ordinary rain and wet snow while on the move, yes: SOFTSHIELD® 10000 material has a 10,000 mm water column and the Waterproof level on the NORDBLANC scale. Taped seams are not listed in the features, so for all-day persistent rain allow a margin or choose trousers with taped seams.

Regular or Slim fit: which fit of insulated leggings should I choose?

Regular is looser and suits you if you want another layer under the leggings; Regular models have high wind resistance and also list cross-country skiing among their activities. Slim fit is close-fitting; the models with it have reflective details and suit brisk movement, for example at dusk.
