How to choose a women’s jacket for the weather and your activity

Before you start choosing, be clear about three things: how cold you expect it to be, whether it will rain or snow, and how much you’ll be moving. When queuing for the lift or waiting at a bus stop, insulation matters most; when running, cross-country skiing or hiking uphill, it’s more about breathability and freedom of movement. In rain and wet snow, the water column always matters.

For the slopes and snowboarding

Women’s ski jackets have a TERATEX® membrane in the ELP version with a water column of 10,000-30,000 mm; models with a DERMIZAX™ membrane have 30,000 mm. They are filled with FURTHERM, THERMOLITE® or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN synthetic insulation, and almost all are rated down to -20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. Practically all have a snow skirt and waterproof zips, and most also have a ski pass pocket and ventilation zips. Snowboard anoraks have a looser Oversized fit, and some softshell ski jackets a close-fitting Slim fit.

For winter in the city and on day trips

For everyday wear, there are quilted Classic winter jackets with FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN insulation, mostly rated down to -10 °C on the NORDBLANC warmth scale. If you walk a lot in rain and wet snow or head to the mountains, go for a waterproof winter jacket - most have a TERATEX® 10000 ELP membrane and are rated down to -20 °C. You can also choose a down jacket or a model without a hood.

For hiking and rain

For hiking, there are uninsulated outdoor jackets with a waterproof membrane: 2LL jackets have TERATEX® with a 15,000 mm water column and a mesh lining inside, while 3LL hardshells are unlined and have TERATEX® 20000 ELP with 20,000 mm. Most have taped seams, waterproof zips and an adjustable hood. For rain in the city, a light waterproof parka works well - it is longer and covers your hips too.

For cross-country skiing, running and cycling

Lightweight sports jackets are built for movement and breathe well. For cross-country skiing, there are insulated jackets from the Nordic range; for running and cycling, light three-layer SOFTSHIELD® 10000 softshells and ultralight windbreakers for wind and light rain. Most sports models have reflective details that make you visible at dusk.

For spring and autumn

The in-between seasons offer the widest choice: light quilted jackets with FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN insulation, softshell jackets, anoraks and coats in SOFTSHIELD® 10000, lightweight waterproof jackets and parkas with a TERATEX® ELP membrane, and Nordic sports jackets. On dry, cool days, a warm sherpa fleece jacket is a good choice.

How to read the specifications on a jacket’s product page

  • Waterproofness and water column - the product page shows a scale from light rain through water-repellent and waterproof to highly waterproof; highly waterproof women’s jackets have 20,000-30,000 mm. With TERATEX® membranes, the number in the name gives the water column. As a guide: 10,000 mm is enough for normal rain and wet snow when walking and for skiing in good weather, 15,000-20,000 mm for persistent rain and whole days on the slopes, and 30,000 mm for the toughest conditions.
  • Breathability (g/m²/24 h) - shows how many grams of water vapour a square metre of fabric lets through in 24 hours. Women’s jackets with a membrane have 8,000-30,000 g; the more intense the activity, the higher the value you should choose.
  • Warmth - shown on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, which has four levels: down to 0 °C, down to -10 °C, down to -20 °C and down to -30 °C and below. The scale is for comparing models; you’ll feel warmer on the move and colder standing in the wind.
  • Insulation - synthetic fibre (FURTHERM, THERMOLITE®, THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN) insulates even when damp, is easy to wash and dries quickly. Only a few models are filled with down - it is light and packs down small, but it needs dry weather.
  • Fit and length - the Regular fit predominates. Parkas and softshell coats are longer and cover the hips better; a shorter jacket gives you more freedom for sport.

How to layer under your jacket

The jacket is the outer layer that protects you from wind, water and cold. Underneath it goes a technical base layer that wicks sweat, and depending on the temperature, a sweatshirt, fleece or insulated gilet. That way, under an uninsulated outdoor or lightweight waterproof jacket, you only add warmth when you really need it.

Technologies and materials

TERATEX® 15000ELP Membrane Core

ELP marked membranes are specifically optimized for female needs of temperature regulation. Durable membrane fabric, which is highly waterproof and breathable. Easily protects against unpredictable weather. Blocks gusty wind from getting through and excels in water repellency. The product from this fabric is suitable for all challenging and extreme sports activities.

TERATEX® 20000ELP Membrane Core

ELP marked membranes are specifically optimized for female needs of temperature regulation. Perfect membrane fabric excels in extreme level of waterproofing and breathability. The uncompromising features of the material and durable water repellency protect easily against extreme weather conditions. The intelligent breathability feature offers comfortable heat circulation in any weather. The product made of this fabric is designed for very demanding outdoor activities and all extreme sports activities.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for demanding outdoor activities. Its main advantages are elasticity, thermal insulation, excellent wind resistance and water resistance, together with perfect breathability. The material is a three-layer laminate in which a suitable combination of materials produces a light, soft, elastic softshell with excellent thermal insulation.

FURTHERM®

Breathable thermal insulation fill. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In extreme weather conditions it accumulates body heat and releases it back later, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

THERMOLITE® ECOMADE T-DOWN

THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN technology is made from 100% recycled PET bottles. This 500 fill power synthetic insulation offers several advantages over down: higher volume, better moisture resistance, warmer when wet, and dries faster. This technology is also breathable, soft and fluffy, and offers high compressibility (packability) with rapid recovery power.

DERMIZAX ®

Dermizax™ is the original Japanese waterproof and breathable fabric technology from Toray and uses decades of experience to manage every part of the construction process. Dermizax™ is a fabric with a highly sophisticated and technical membrane that achieves the highest level of waterproofness, breathability and resistance to condensation. The fabric is stretchable, adaptable and flexible. This makes it ideal for sporting activities that take place in extreme environmental conditions, such as mountain climbing, trail running and winter sports. Whatever sport you choose, Dermizax™ can adapt and protect you from the worst that nature can throw at it while you remain comfortable and in control.

Frequently asked questions

What women’s jacket should I choose for hiking and the mountains?

For hiking, choose an uninsulated waterproof outdoor jacket and add warmth with layers to suit the weather. For all-day hikes in the rain and in the mountains, a 3LL hardshell with a TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane (20,000 mm) is the safer choice; for day trips and shorter hikes, a 2LL jacket with a 15,000 mm water column and a mesh lining is enough. When it’s cold, wear a base layer and a fleece or insulated gilet underneath.

Water-resistant or waterproof jacket - what’s the difference?

Water-resistant is a loosely used term, so go by the waterproofness scale and the water column on the jacket’s product page. A waterproof jacket has a membrane that can handle even longer spells of rain - in NORDBLANC women’s jackets, with a water column of 8,000-30,000 mm. A water-repellent jacket only has a surface finish that makes water run off, and it can cope with a short shower. With a waterproof jacket, also look for taped seams and waterproof zips, as water could otherwise get through there.

Which women’s jacket should I choose for spring and autumn?

On cool, dry days, a light quilted transitional jacket with FURTHERM insulation is enough - it is rated down to 0 °C or -10 °C (NORDBLANC warmth scale). For wind and showers, a softshell jacket in SOFTSHIELD® 10000 is practical; for rain, a light waterproof jacket or parka with a TERATEX® ELP membrane (8,000-15,000 mm). When it gets colder, add a sweatshirt under the softshell or waterproof jacket.

Which women’s jacket is suitable for cross-country skiing?

For cross-country skiing, choose a light, breathable jacket that won’t make you overheat when you’re moving fast. Women’s Nordic jackets have insulated front and back panels with THERMOLITE® or FURTHERM insulation, mostly combined with stretchy powerfleece or softshell panels; on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale they are rated down to 0 °C, some down to -10 °C. In freezing weather, add a base layer or a thin sweatshirt underneath - a ski jacket is unnecessarily warm for cross-country skiing.

How do I wash a women’s jacket with a membrane or down filling?

Wash the jacket according to the care label, usually at 30 °C, inside out and with the zips done up. For membranes and synthetic insulation, use a liquid detergent for technical fabrics, and for down, a special down wash; don’t add fabric softener or bleach. If the care label allows, tumble-dry a down jacket on a low heat with dryer balls. Once water stops beading on the fabric, it’s time to reproof it.
