How to dress for cycling

On a bike you travel faster than on foot and constantly into the wind, so it is important that clothing wicks sweat away, fits close and doesn’t flap. A jersey and shorts form the basis; on cooler and wet days, you add a light jacket or gilet.

In fine weather: jersey and shorts

Cycling jerseys (9 models) are stretchy and have DRYFOR fibre, which wicks sweat away. All have reflective and anti-slip elements that stop the jersey riding up, and most also have a back pocket for small items.

Cycling shorts (11 models) are made of stretchy polyester or nylon with 13-22% elastane, and you can choose with or without braces. 5 models have flat seams, which rub less.

For cooler and changeable days

Ultralight sports jackets (10 models) are light, windproof and rated light rain on the NORDBLANC waterproofness scale; ultralight gilets (2 models) are similarly light and water-repellent. Five models are labelled packable. For the legs there are insulated waterproof leggings (3 models) in SOFTSHIELD®, rated down to -10 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale.

In the rain

Waterproof light softshell jackets (8 models) and light waterproof softshell trousers (5 models) are made of SOFTSHIELD® with a water column of 10,000 mm. The jackets have reflective details and mostly taped seams; the trousers have zips in the bottom hem of the legs and stretchy POWERFLEECE fabric. One model of waterproof sports jacket has a TERATEX® membrane (8,000 mm), taped seams and a hood that packs into the collar.

Gloves and accessories

Cycling gloves come full-finger (3 models) and fingerless (2 models), all in 100% polyester; there are also 2 models of softshell gloves. Sports glasses are another accessory.

What to look for when choosing

Fit and stretch - 39 models are elastic. A jersey and shorts should fit snugly, so they don’t flap or ride up.
Visibility and anti-slip - 52 of the 63 models have reflective details and 25 have anti-slip elements; 4 models have a printed anti-slip strip in the hem.
Sweat transport - 41 models have DRYFOR fibre, 47 are labelled breathable and 28 quick-drying.
Wind and water - 31 models are windproof. A water column of 10,000 mm is found in SOFTSHIELD® models (20 models), one model has 8,000 mm and one water-repellent model has 5,000 mm and is not waterproof.
Weight and packability - 23 models are light in weight and 5 are labelled packable.
Pockets and details - 14 models have a back pocket, 7 an elastic waist and 3 ventilation zips.

Technologies and materials

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for demanding outdoor activities. Its main advantages are elasticity, thermal insulation, excellent wind resistance and water resistance, together with perfect breathability. The material is a three-layer laminate in which a suitable combination of materials produces a light, soft, elastic softshell with excellent thermal insulation.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, micro-brushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and comfort. The outside is smooth and very pleasant to the touch, and it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against gusty wind.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear for cycling in spring and autumn?

The basis is a cycling jersey and shorts, with a light windproof layer over the jersey. An ultralight sports jacket or gilet is windproof, the jacket copes with light rain too, and some models can be packed away. For a cold morning, add full-finger gloves; for rain, a waterproof softshell jacket with a water column of 10,000 mm is the better choice.

Ultralight jacket or softshell for cycling?

An ultralight sports jacket is windproof and light in weight, and some models pack away, but it has no stated water column - on the NORDBLANC scale it copes only with light rain. A waterproof light softshell jacket in SOFTSHIELD® has a water column of 10,000 mm and mostly taped seams, so it copes with ordinary rain. For dry spring rides an ultralight jacket is enough; for changeable weather, choose a softshell.

Cycling shorts with braces or without?

Shorts with braces stay firmly in place and don’t dig in at the waist, which you will appreciate mainly on longer rides; shorts without braces are easier to put on. NORDBLANC offers 11 models of men’s and women’s cycling shorts, 5 with braces and 6 without, and on some the braces are perforated.

Full-finger or fingerless cycling gloves?

Full-finger gloves cover the whole finger and suit cooler weather, while fingerless gloves leave the fingers free and are the choice for warm weather. Both are 100% polyester: there are 3 models of full-finger gloves and 2 of fingerless gloves. There are also 2 models of softshell gloves on offer.
