How to choose a women’s gilet

A gilet keeps your chest and back warm and leaves your arms free. In the in-between seasons, you wear it on its own; in the cold, over a sweatshirt or under a jacket. Choose according to whether you want it mainly for everyday wear or for sport.

A winter gilet for every day

Apart from one down gilet, the winter gilets have synthetic insulation - most of them FURTHERM hollow polyester fibre, a smaller number THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN insulation. Synthetic insulation keeps you warm even when damp and is easy to wash. Winter gilets are rated down to 0 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, so in freezing weather, wear them under a jacket.

Waterproof and long winter gilets

Some winter gilets have a TERATEX® 10000 ELP membrane with a water column of 10,000 mm, which handles normal rain and wet snow. Long winter gilets also cover the hips and suit the city and walks; most of them are waterproof. You can also choose a model with a hood and side zips or with a two-way zip.

A sports gilet for cross-country skiing, running and cycling

Nordic sports gilets have insulated front and back panels with THERMOLITE® insulation, and the other parts are made of stretchy POWERFLEECE fabric. They are rated down to 0 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, don’t restrict your movement, and are worn on their own for cross-country skiing, winter running and cycling, or as a warm layer under a ski jacket. The ultralight gilet is water-repellent, packable and has reflective details - for spring runs or bike rides in wind and light rain.

What to look for in a gilet

Insulation - FURTHERM is a breathable hollow polyester fibre; THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN is a synthetic insulation that stays warm even when damp and dries quickly. Down is light and packs down well, but moisture is bad for it.
Warmth - both the winter gilets and the Nordic sports gilets are at the lowest level of NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, down to 0 °C; the higher levels, up to ‘down to -30 °C and below’, are found on jackets and coats, so in freezing weather combine your gilet with a jacket.
Waterproofness - only the gilets with a TERATEX® membrane have a water column of 10,000 mm; the other winter gilets have no membrane and aren’t designed for rain.
Length and fit - almost all gilets have a Regular fit. A long gilet covers the hips; a short one doesn’t get in the way and fits under a jacket.
Weight and stretch - a number of winter gilets are made of ultralight fabric, and the Nordic sports gilets have stretchy POWERFLEECE panels.
Features - depending on the model, a hood, side zips, a two-way zip or an adjustable hem; the sports gilets often have reflective details.

How to wear a gilet throughout the year

In autumn and spring, a winter gilet over a sweatshirt or long-sleeved top is enough. In winter, wear it under a jacket, where it adds warmth to your core without restricting your arms. Wash gilets with synthetic insulation according to the care label and let them dry naturally; tumble-dry a down gilet on a low heat if the label allows it.

FURTHERM®

Breathable thermal insulation fill. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In extreme weather conditions it accumulates body heat and releases it back later, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

TERATEX® 10000ELP Core

ELP marked membranes are specifically optimized for female needs of temperature regulation. The medium level of NORDBLANC's top-of-the-line fabrics. Waterproof fabric that repels water from the surface of the fabric, while it offers the necessary waterproofness, breathability and wind protection. The product made of this fabric is suitable for everyday sports and everyday use.

THERMOLITE® ECOMADE T-DOWN

THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN technology is made from 100% recycled PET bottles. This 500 fill power synthetic insulation offers several advantages over down: higher volume, better moisture resistance, warmer when wet, and dries faster. This technology is also breathable, soft and fluffy, and offers high compressibility (packability) with rapid recovery power.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, micro-brushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and comfort. The outside is smooth and very pleasant to the touch, and it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against gusty wind.

Frequently asked questions

Does a women’s winter gilet keep you warm in freezing weather?

On its own, not really: winter gilets are rated down to 0 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. In the in-between seasons, you wear them on their own over a sweatshirt; in freezing weather, as a warm layer under a jacket, where they keep your core warm without restricting your arms. The insulation is mostly synthetic - FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN.

Long or short women’s gilet?

A long winter gilet also covers your hips, so it is best suited to the city and walks; most NORDBLANC long gilets also have a TERATEX® membrane with a water column of 10,000 mm. A short gilet doesn’t get in the way when you move and fits under a jacket, so it also works as a mid-layer for day trips. For cross-country skiing and running, choose a short Nordic sports gilet.

Can you wear a women’s winter gilet in the rain?

Only some of them: models with a TERATEX® 10000 ELP membrane have a water column of 10,000 mm and can handle normal rain and wet snow. The other winter gilets have no membrane, so they aren’t made for rain - they are worn in dry weather or as a warm layer under a jacket. The ultralight sports gilet is water-repellent: it protects you from wind and a short shower.

Which women’s gilet for cross-country skiing and winter running?

A Nordic sports gilet. Its front and back panels are insulated with THERMOLITE®, and the rest is made of stretchy POWERFLEECE, so it doesn’t restrict your movement. It is rated down to 0 °C (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale); you wear it over a technical T-shirt or sweatshirt, and on the slopes you can also wear it under a ski jacket.
