How to choose a men’s jacket for your activity

What matters most is where and how you’ll wear the jacket: how cold it will be, how much rain or snow to expect and how much you’ll be moving. The more you move, the more breathability matters; the more you stand around in the cold, the more the insulation counts.

For skiing and snowboarding

Ski jackets combine a waterproof membrane with insulation. Most have a TERATEX® membrane with a water column of 10,000-20,000 mm; models with a DERMIZAX™ membrane have the highest water column, 30,000 mm. Most models have taped seams, a snow skirt, a ski pass pocket and ventilation zips. On NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, almost all are rated down to -20 °C.

For winter and the city

Winter jackets keep you warm with FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® EcoMade synthetic insulation or with down. For wet snow and rain, choose waterproof winter jackets with a TERATEX® membrane (10,000-15,000 mm); for dry cold and the city, a quilted Classic jacket is enough. On NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, winter jackets are mostly rated down to -10 °C or -20 °C; you can choose jackets with or without a hood, as well as down jackets and versatile 3-in-1 jackets.

For the mountains and hiking

For hiking, there are uninsulated waterproof outdoor jackets: 2LL jackets with a mesh lining and a TERATEX® membrane (15,000 mm) and unlined 3LL hardshells with TERATEX® (20,000 mm), all with taped seams. Depending on the weather, wear a fleece or an insulated gilet underneath.

For running, cross-country skiing and sport

Lightweight sports jackets and softshells protect you from wind and light rain and breathe well when you’re on the move. Softshell jackets in SOFTSHIELD® 10000 have a water column of 10,000 mm and a breathability of 10,000 g/m²/24 h; the insulated versions are rated down to -10 °C (NORDBLANC warmth scale). For cross-country skiing, there are Nordic models - softshell, powerfleece and waterproof.

For spring and autumn

For the in-between seasons, there are light quilted jackets with FURTHERM insulation, sports jackets with insulated panels and uninsulated jackets. For rain, there are lightweight waterproof jackets with a TERATEX® membrane (8,000-15,000 mm).

How to read a jacket’s specifications

  • Water column (mm) - the waterproof rating: how much water pressure the fabric can withstand. As a rough guide: 5,000 mm repels water in a short shower, 10,000 mm handles normal rain and wet snow in everyday wear, 15,000-20,000 mm persistent rain and a full day on the slopes, and 30,000 mm the toughest conditions.
  • Breathability (g/m²/24 h) - how much water vapour from sweat passes through the fabric in a day. For running, ski touring or uphill hikes, choose 15,000 g or more.
  • Warmth - NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale: down to 0 °C, down to -10 °C, down to -20 °C and down to -30 °C and below. Everyone feels the cold differently; if you’ll be standing in the cold for a long time, go for a higher level.
  • Insulation - synthetic insulation (FURTHERM, THERMOLITE®) stays warm even when damp and dries quickly; down is lighter and packs down smaller, but moisture is bad for it.
  • Taped seams and waterproof zips - seal the seams and zips, where water could otherwise get in even on a jacket with a good membrane.
  • Fit - most jackets have a Regular fit; Oversized models are looser.

Technologies and materials

TERATEX® 20000 Membrane Core

Perfect membrane fabric excels in extreme level of waterproofing and breathability. The uncompromising features of the material and durable water repellency protects easily against extreme weather conditions. The intelligent breathability feature offers comfortable heat circulation in any weather. The product made of this fabric is designed for very demanding outdoor activities and all extreme sports activities.

TERATEX® 10000 Core

The medium level of NORDBLANC's top-of-the-line fabrics. Waterproof fabric that repels water from the surface of the fabric, while it offers the necessary waterproofness, breathability and wind protection. The product made of this fabric is suitable for everyday sports and everyday use.

DERMIZAX ®

Dermizax™ is the original Japanese waterproof and breathable fabric technology from Toray and uses decades of experience to manage every part of the construction process. Dermizax™ is a fabric with a highly sophisticated and technical membrane that achieves the highest level of waterproofness, breathability and resistance to condensation. The fabric is stretchable, adaptable and flexible. This makes it ideal for sporting activities that take place in extreme environmental conditions, such as mountain climbing, trail running and winter sports. Whatever sport you choose, Dermizax™ can adapt and protect you from the worst that nature can throw at it while you remain comfortable and in control.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for demanding outdoor activities. Its main advantages are elasticity, thermal insulation, excellent wind resistance and water resistance, together with perfect breathability. The material is a three-layer laminate in which a suitable combination of materials produces a light, soft, elastic softshell with excellent thermal insulation.

FURTHERM®

Breathable thermal insulation fill. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In extreme weather conditions it accumulates body heat and releases it back later, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

THERMOLITE® ECOMADE T-DOWN

THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN technology is made from 100% recycled PET bottles. This 500 fill power synthetic insulation offers several advantages over down: higher volume, better moisture resistance, warmer when wet, and dries faster. This technology is also breathable, soft and fluffy, and offers high compressibility (packability) with rapid recovery power.

Frequently asked questions

What waterproof rating does a ski jacket need?

For normal skiing in good weather, 10,000 mm is enough. If you also ski in falling or wet snow, or spend whole days outside, choose 15,000-20,000 mm. Ski jackets with a DERMIZAX™ membrane have a water column of 30,000 mm. Taped seams and waterproof zips matter as much as the number - without them, water can get in through the seams and zips even with a good membrane.

What’s the difference between a softshell and a waterproof jacket?

A softshell is stretchy, breathable and gives good protection from the wind; it can handle light rain and snow (SOFTSHIELD® 10000 has a water column of 10,000 mm). A waterproof jacket with a membrane and taped seams (a hardshell) is better for prolonged rain and the mountains. A softshell suits active movement, a waterproof jacket bad weather.

Down or synthetic insulation?

For its weight, down is very warm and packs down small, but it loses its insulating ability when damp. Synthetic insulation such as FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® keeps you warm even when damp, dries faster and is easy to wash. Synthetic insulation is more practical for wet weather and active use, down for dry, freezing cold.

How do I choose the right jacket size?

Each jacket’s product page has a size chart with measurements. Measure your chest and sleeve length and compare them with the chart. If you’ll wear a sweatshirt or base layer underneath, choose a size you can move comfortably in with the extra layer.
