How to choose a men’s coat for your needs

NORDBLANC men’s coats are designed for everyday wear - for the city, work, walks and travel. Choose mainly according to the weather you’ll wear the coat in: wet snow and rain, dry cold, or the in-between days of spring and autumn.

For winter in the city and at work

The core of the range is made up of winter coats with a TERATEX® membrane and FURTHERM synthetic insulation; one model has THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN insulation. All are rated down to -20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. They have an adjustable drawcord hood (mostly detachable), an inner chest pocket and inner elastic cuffs in the sleeves that keep the wind out.

For rain and wet snow

Most winter coats have a TERATEX® membrane with a water column of 10,000 or 15,000 mm, so they handle rain, sleet and wet snow. If you walk a lot in all weathers, choose 15,000 mm. The coat with TERATEX® 5000 is only water-repellent - fine for dry cold and a short shower, but not for persistent rain.

For severe cold

Down coats are filled with 70% down and 30% feathers and are rated down to -30 °C and below on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. The outer fabric is water-repellent, but no water column or membrane is stated, and down loses its insulating ability when damp. Reach for them in dry, freezing weather and wherever you’ll be standing outside for a long time.

For spring and autumn

Sweater-look softshell coats have a knitted outer face, fleece inside and, between the layers, a SOFTSHIELD® membrane with a water column of 5,000 mm. They are water-repellent, can handle a short shower and are best suited to the city on cooler spring and autumn days. They don’t have their own subcategory - you’ll find them among all the men’s coats.

How to read a coat’s specifications

Water column (mm) - men’s coats have 5,000 mm (water-repellent only, for a short shower), 10,000 mm (normal rain and wet snow) or 15,000 mm (even longer walks in the rain); no water column is stated for the down coats.
Warmth - NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale; winter coats with synthetic insulation are rated down to -20 °C, down coats down to -30 °C and below, and no warmth level is stated for the sweater-look softshell coats.
Insulation - winter coats are mostly insulated with FURTHERM hollow polyester fibre, some with THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN synthetic fill or with down (70% down, 30% feathers). Synthetic insulation keeps you warm even when damp; down gives more warmth for the same weight.
Hood - all winter coats have an adjustable drawcord hood, and on most it zips off.
Inner shoulder straps - all winter coats have them. In a shop or restaurant, you can carry the coat on your back like a backpack instead of holding it.
Fit - all men’s coats have a Regular fit.

What to wear under a coat

In the city, a shirt, sweater or sweatshirt under a winter coat is enough. If you’ll be outside in the cold for a long time, add thermal underwear - several thinner layers keep you warmer than one thick one. Under a fleece-lined sweater-look softshell coat, a T-shirt or shirt is usually enough in spring and autumn.

Breathable thermal insulation fill. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In extreme weather conditions it accumulates body heat and releases it back later, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

TERATEX® 15000 Membrane Core

Durable membrane fabric, which is highly waterproof and breathable. Easily protects against unpredictable weather. Blocks gusty wind from getting through and excels in water repellency. The product from this fabric is suitable for all challenging and extreme sports activities.

SOFTSHIELD®

SOFTSHIELD® is a soft, flexible material perfectly suited to outdoor activities thanks to its properties and elasticity. You'll love its reliable water resistance, breathability, and exceptional wind resistance.

THERMOLITE® ECOMADE T-DOWN

THERMOLITE® EcoMade T-DOWN technology is made from 100% recycled PET bottles. This 500 fill power synthetic insulation offers several advantages over down: higher volume, better moisture resistance, warmer when wet, and dries faster. This technology is also breathable, soft and fluffy, and offers high compressibility (packability) with rapid recovery power.

Men’s coat or jacket - which is better for winter?

For the city, work and travel, a coat is more practical: it is longer, protects your hips and seat better from cold and wind, and NORDBLANC men’s coats are designed precisely for everyday wear. A jacket is shorter and gives you more freedom of movement, so it is better suited to skiing, hiking and sport. Most men’s winter coats use the same technologies as the jackets - a TERATEX® membrane and FURTHERM or THERMOLITE® insulation - and all of them also have inner shoulder straps for carrying the coat when you take it off.

Are NORDBLANC men’s coats waterproof?

Most men’s winter coats are - they have a TERATEX® membrane with a water column of 10,000 or 15,000 mm, which handles rain and wet snow. The coat with TERATEX® 5000 and the sweater-look softshell coats with SOFTSHIELD® 5000 are only water-repellent: they can handle a short shower, but not persistent rain. The down coats have a water-repellent outer fabric with no stated water column.

Which men’s coat for spring and autumn?

For the in-between seasons, there are sweater-look softshell coats with a knitted outer face, fleece inside and a SOFTSHIELD® membrane with a water column of 5,000 mm. They are water-repellent, can handle a short shower and are best suited to the city. For cold, rainy days in late autumn, a waterproof winter coat with a TERATEX® membrane is the safer choice.

Do NORDBLANC men’s coats have a parka cut?

Yes, most men’s winter coats are parka-style: they have an adjustable drawcord hood, detachable on most models, a waterproof TERATEX® membrane and synthetic insulation. A parka is a longer hooded jacket, usually covering the hips, often with a drawcord at the waist or hem; a classic coat tends to be longer and may have no hood.
