How to choose a thermal top for your activity and the weather

A thermal top is a base layer: you wear it directly on your skin and the rest of your clothing over it. This category contains only tops and T-shirts, men’s and women’s, in four ranges according to the weather and your pace. You will find the other thermal underwear in the thermal underwear category.

Winter range: when movement alternates with standing still

The winter thermal tops are 96% polyester and 4% elastane, and all of them have DRYFOR fibre. All are listed for running, hiking, cycling and skiing, and two thirds of them for cross-country skiing too. Reach for them in cold weather and wherever movement alternates with standing still: on the lift, during a stop on a hike or before the start.

All-season and lightweight range: running, cycling, brisk walking

You wear the all-season thermal tops all year round as a base layer. The men’s all-season tops are 100% polyester, while the women’s are mostly 88% polyester and 12% elastane, so they stretch more. The lightweight tops are 88% polyester and 12% elastane and, according to the description, belong in mild weather or fast movement in the cold. Both ranges are listed for running, hiking, cycling and skiing.

Merino: wool instead of polyester

The merino T-shirts are made of wool, and merino wool makes up 96-100% of the material. According to the description they have a short sleeve and are listed for running, hiking and cycling; skiing is not among their activities. You will not find DRYFOR fibre in them.

Men’s and women’s thermal tops

Men’s tops are available from size XS (from S on some models) to XXXL, and women’s from 34 to 44, on some models up to 48. You will find all four ranges in both men’s and women’s versions. Every top has a size chart; only some models state the height of the model in the photo.

What to look at in a thermal top

Range in the name - the word in the name (Winter, All-year, Light, merino) tells you which range it is. Thermal tops do not have a warmth scale like jackets and trousers.
Fibre - the polyester tops have DRYFOR fibre, which carries sweat from the skin to the surface of the fabric. The merino T-shirts are made of wool and do not have DRYFOR.
Flat seams - according to the descriptions, the polyester tops have them, and on some of the winter and all-season ones they are also listed in the features on the product page. They reduce chafing against the skin.
Sleeve - the description states a short sleeve for the merino T-shirts. For the other models, judge the sleeve length from the photos.
Activities - you will find the activities a top is listed for on the product page. All the tops list running, hiking and cycling, all the polyester ones skiing, roughly half cross-country skiing and fewer than a third snowboarding.

In NORDBLANC product names, a baselayer top and a baselayer T-shirt are just two ways of naming the same type of garment, a base layer worn under other clothing, however the name is spelled. Neither the word top nor the word T-shirt tells you the range, the material or the sleeve. You can tell the range from the word in the name (Winter, All-year, Light, merino). The description states a short sleeve for the merino T-shirts; for the other models, judge the sleeve length from the photos on the product page.

Can a thermal top be worn in warm weather too, or only in winter?

It can, but choose the lightweight or all-season range. According to the description, the lightweight thermal tops are intended for mild and warm weather and for fast movement in the cold, and the all-season ones are worn all year round. Keep the winter range for cold days and standing around outdoors, otherwise you can easily overheat in it.

Which activities are NORDBLANC thermal tops intended for?
