How to dress for running

When running you warm up within a few minutes, so dress at the start so that you feel slightly cold. Thin layers that wick sweat away and can be added or removed according to the weather are practical.

T-shirt, tank top and lower body

Next to the body goes a technical T-shirt or tank top in polyester, or in nylon with elastane. Thanks to the micro-grooves in the DRYFOR fibre, sweat is moved to the outside of the material and evaporates quickly. The range has 11 models of T-shirts and 4 models of tank tops, and women will also find a sports bra.

In warm weather, running shorts (3 models) or short leggings are suitable; on cooler days, long or 3/4 leggings. Light waterproof softshell trousers (5 models) have a water column of 10,000 mm and zips in the bottom hem of the legs.

Jacket and gilet for wind and cold

Ultralight sports jackets (10 models) are windproof and protect against light rain, so they suit running in spring and autumn. For colder days there are insulated sports jackets and gilets with hollow-fibre insulation - THERMOLITE®, and FURTHERM in a few models - and often with stretchy POWERFLEECE. On NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale they are mostly rated down to 0 °C, and a few models down to -10 °C.

In the rain

Waterproof light softshell jackets (8 models) are made of SOFTSHIELD® with a water column of 10,000 mm and a breathability of 10,000 g/m²/24 h; they have reflective details and most also have taped seams. Three models of sports jackets have a TERATEX® membrane (8,000-10,000 mm). Note the difference: ultralight jackets are rated only for light rain and are not made for a longer downpour.

At dusk

More than half of the models have reflective details, mainly jackets, light gilets and softshell trousers; technical T-shirts have them only exceptionally. If you run after dark, plan on a reflective jacket or gilet over your T-shirt.

What to look for when choosing

Stretch and fit - 78 of the 97 models are labelled elastic, and more than half of the models contain elastane. 56 models have a Regular fit, 13 a close-fitting Slim fit, and for the others no fit is stated.
Sweat transport and breathability - 57 models have DRYFOR fibre, 69 are labelled breathable and 43 quick-drying.
Wind protection - 52 models are windproof. For jackets, the NORDBLANC scale mostly shows medium wind resistance, and high for some models.
Water column and seams - 10,000 mm is the most common value (range 8,000-10,000 mm) and copes with ordinary rain. 7 models have taped seams, and 7 models also have waterproof zips.
Warmth - NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale is for comparing models; when running you warm up through movement, so a lower level is enough than when standing in the frost.
Details - 9 models have a back pocket, 7 an elastic waist, 7 zips in the bottom hem of the legs and 5 a hood that packs into the collar.

Technologies and materials

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for demanding outdoor activities. Its main advantages are elasticity, thermal insulation, excellent wind resistance and water resistance, together with perfect breathability. The material is a three-layer laminate in which a suitable combination of materials produces a light, soft, elastic softshell with excellent thermal insulation.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, micro-brushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and comfort. The outside is smooth and very pleasant to the touch, and it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against gusty wind.

Frequently asked questions

Down to what temperature does an insulated running jacket or gilet keep you warm?

Most NORDBLANC insulated running jackets and gilets are rated down to 0 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale, and a few models down to -10 °C. The scale is for comparing models; when running you warm up through movement, so a lower level is enough than when standing in the frost. A technical T-shirt is usually enough under the jacket; in frost, add a thin extra layer.

Which running jacket should I choose for rain and wind?

For wind, an ultralight sports jacket is enough: it is windproof and copes with light rain. For rain, choose a waterproof light softshell jacket in SOFTSHIELD® with a water column of 10,000 mm, which 8 models have, most of them with taped seams. A breathability of 10,000 g/m²/24 h helps to wick sweat away even in a waterproof jacket.

Do running jackets and T-shirts have reflective details for running at dusk?

Most NORDBLANC running jackets, light gilets and softshell trousers have reflective details; technical T-shirts have them only exceptionally. Across the whole Jogging category, 53 of the 97 models have them. To be clearly visible at dusk, put a reflective jacket or gilet over your T-shirt and check the features on the product page.

Polyester or nylon - what is running clothing made of?

NORDBLANC running clothing is made of polyester or nylon, often with some elastane. The main fibre is polyester in 54 models and nylon in 43 models. Polyester tends to be lighter and dries quickly, while nylon feels smoother to the touch and resists abrasion better; DRYFOR fibre wicks sweat in models of both materials.
