What softshell trousers are and when to wear them

Softshell is a stretchy fabric that stops wind and light rain while letting sweat escape. At NORDBLANC, it is SOFTSHIELD®: most men’s softshell trousers are made of three-layer SOFTSHIELD® with a membrane, a water column of 10,000 mm and a breathability of 10,000 g/m²/24 h. They suit active outdoor pursuits – hiking, cross-country skiing, winter walks and sport in cold weather.

How to choose men’s softshell trousers for your activity

For winter and winter hikes

Winter softshell trousers have warm microfleece on the inside and are rated down to −10 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. All have leg adjusters, and most have waterproof zips. If you’ll be standing in the cold for a long time, wear thermal underwear underneath.

For cross-country skiing and winter cycling

Multisport softshell trousers are designed for cross-country skiing, winter cycling and running. Most models have insulated SOFTSHIELD® softshell with fleece at the front and quick-drying, very stretchy POWERFLEECE at the back, a narrower Slim fit and a rating down to −20 °C. All have reflective details, and some models have a back pocket or detachable braces.

For hiking, running and cycling

Lightweight sports softshell trousers are made of very light three-layer SOFTSHIELD® with a water column of 10,000 mm. They have ventilation zips, reflective details and hem zips. You can wear them for hiking, running, cycling and cross-country skiing.

For leisure

Softshell joggers combine the comfort of joggers with durable softshell and fleece inside. They have no membrane, so they aren’t waterproof – they only repel water. They are rated down to 0 °C and are suitable for walks, day trips and everyday wear.

How to read the specifications of men’s softshell trousers

Water column – SOFTSHIELD® 10000 has 10,000 mm and handles light rain and snow while you’re on the move. For persistent rain, waterproof trousers with taped seams are more reliable.
Breathability – how quickly the fabric lets sweat escape as vapour; SOFTSHIELD® 10000 has 10,000 g/m²/24 h. During intense activity, ventilation zips help.
Warmth – NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale: winter softshell trousers down to −10 °C, multisport trousers down to −10 °C or −20 °C, softshell joggers down to 0 °C.
Fleece inside – the winter models and most multisport trousers have fleece or microfleece on the inside, which adds warmth without bulky insulation.
Fit – most models have a Regular fit; the multisport trousers for cross-country skiing mostly have a narrower Slim fit.
Leg features – leg adjusters, hem zips or elastic hems and anti-slip elements help the leg sit well at the boot.

Functional outdoor material for high demanding outdoor activities. Main advantage is elasticity, heat insulation, great windproofness, waterproofness and perfect breathability. The material consists of a three laminated layers. Carefully combining the most compatible layers, we created light, elastic and soft fabric with excellent thermal insulation.

SOFTSHIELD® is a soft, flexible material perfectly suited to outdoor activities thanks to its properties and elasticity. You'll love its reliable water resistance, breathability, and exceptional wind resistance.

POWERFLEECE

Lightweight, highly elastic material, microbrushed on the inside for increased thermal insulation and outstanding comfort. On shell side is very smooth and nice to touch, it offers excellent thermal insulation and protection against the windchills.

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

Are men’s softshell trousers waterproof?

Mostly, yes: models made of SOFTSHIELD® 10000 have a membrane with a water column of 10,000 mm and can handle light rain and snow while you’re on the move. Softshell joggers have no membrane and are protected from rain only by their water-repellent surface. For persistent rain, waterproof trousers with taped seams and a higher water column are more reliable.

What temperatures are insulated men’s softshell trousers suitable for?

NORDBLANC winter softshell trousers are rated down to −10 °C, and the multisport softshell trousers for cross-country skiing down to −10 °C or −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. The warmth comes from microfleece or fleece on the inside of the softshell. If you’ll be standing in the cold for a long time, wear thermal underwear under the trousers.

Are men’s softshell trousers enough for skiing?

For shorter spring ski sessions in dry weather, yes; for whole days on the slopes, falling snow and wet snow, ski trousers are better. SOFTSHIELD® softshell trousers have a water column of 10,000 mm, ski trousers mostly 15,000–30,000 mm, plus inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip, braces and a rating down to −20 °C (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale). Softshell is better suited to cross-country skiing and winter hikes.

How do I wash men’s softshell trousers?

Wash them according to the symbols on the care label, usually at 30 °C on a delicates or sportswear cycle, with a liquid detergent for technical fabrics. Don’t use fabric softener or bleach; turn the trousers inside out and close the zips. Dry them naturally, not on a radiator. As soon as the surface starts to get damp instead of water beading on it, restore its water repellency with a proofing product for technical fabrics.
