How to choose men’s trousers for your activity

First, think about where you’ll wear the trousers. On the slopes, waterproofness and warmth are what count; for cross-country skiing and hiking, stretch and breathability; in the city, comfort. Choose the type of trousers, the fabric and the leg features accordingly.

For skiing and snowboarding

Ski trousers have a TERATEX® membrane, mostly with a water column of 15,000-30,000 mm, or DERMIZAX™ with 30,000 mm. All are rated down to -20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale and have detachable braces and inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip that pull over your ski boots. Most models are insulated with FURTHERM and have taped seams and waterproof zips.

For winter and winter hikes

For walks and hikes in freezing weather, there are insulated softshell trousers with a microfleece lining, rated down to -10 °C; most are made of SOFTSHIELD® with a water column of 10,000 mm. For wet snow, insulated waterproof outdoor trousers with a TERATEX® membrane (water column 10,000 mm), a fleece lining and both waterproof and ventilation zips work well.

For hiking and the mountains

For hikes from spring to autumn, choose outdoor trousers in a stretchy fabric with DRYFOR technical fibre, which wicks sweat. The lightweight models are mainly for summer; sturdier trousers in double-woven DOUBLE WEAVE fabric stand up to gusty wind. You can also choose 2-in-1 trousers with zip-off legs and, for unexpected rain, overtrousers with full-length leg zips.

For cross-country skiing, running and cycling

For cross-country skiing, there are multisport softshell trousers made of SOFTSHIELD®. Most models have stretchy POWERFLEECE at the back, a narrower Slim fit and a rating down to -20 °C, and all have reflective details. Lightweight softshell trousers with ventilation zips are good for running, cycling and hiking.

For everyday wear

For the city, work and travel, casual trousers are a good choice: they look like regular everyday trousers but are as comfortable to move in as outdoor ones. You can choose a cargo cut, cotton or stretchy fabrics with DRYFOR technical fibre. For relaxing at home, there are loose-fitting cotton joggers.

How to read the specifications of men’s trousers

  • Water column (mm) - how high a column of water the fabric can hold back before it starts to let water through. Trousers take more strain than a jacket: when you sit on a wet chairlift seat or kneel in the snow, water presses harder on the fabric. For all-day skiing, choose 15,000 mm or more; for hiking in the rain, at least 10,000 mm.
  • Breathability (g/m²/24 h) - how many grams of sweat in the form of vapour a square metre of fabric lets out in 24 hours. Models with a DERMIZAX™ membrane have 30,000 g/m²/24 h, SOFTSHIELD® 10000 softshell 10,000 g/m²/24 h.
  • Warmth - NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale; for trousers, you’ll find the levels down to 0 °C, down to -10 °C and down to -20 °C. If you stand around in the cold more than you move, choose a higher level or add thermal underwear.
  • Insulation - FURTHERM fill, made of hollow polyester fibre, keeps you warm even when damp and dries quickly. Fleece or microfleece on the inside of the fabric adds warmth while the trousers stay stretchy.
  • Taped seams and waterproof zips - without them, water seeps in through the needle holes in the seams and through the zips, even if the fabric itself is waterproof. Most ski trousers have them.
  • Leg features - inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip keep snow out of your boots, a hem zip makes it easier to pull the trousers over ski boots, and leg adjusters fit the width of the leg to your boot.
  • Fit - most trousers have a Regular fit, some sports models a narrower Slim fit.

Technologies and materials

TERATEX® 20000 Membrane Core

Perfect membrane fabric excels in extreme level of waterproofing and breathability. The uncompromising features of the material and durable water repellency protects easily against extreme weather conditions. The intelligent breathability feature offers comfortable heat circulation in any weather. The product made of this fabric is designed for very demanding outdoor activities and all extreme sports activities.

DERMIZAX ®

Dermizax™ is the original Japanese waterproof and breathable fabric technology from Toray and uses decades of experience to manage every part of the construction process. Dermizax™ is a fabric with a highly sophisticated and technical membrane that achieves the highest level of waterproofness, breathability and resistance to condensation. The fabric is stretchable, adaptable and flexible. This makes it ideal for sporting activities that take place in extreme environmental conditions, such as mountain climbing, trail running and winter sports. Whatever sport you choose, Dermizax™ can adapt and protect you from the worst that nature can throw at it while you remain comfortable and in control.

SOFTSHIELD® TERATEX® 10000

Functional outdoor material for demanding outdoor activities. Its main advantages are elasticity, thermal insulation, excellent wind resistance and water resistance, together with perfect breathability. The material is a three-layer laminate in which a suitable combination of materials produces a light, soft, elastic softshell with excellent thermal insulation.

FURTHERM®

Breathable thermal insulation fill. Keeps the body warm and comfortable. In extreme weather conditions it accumulates body heat and releases it back later, helping to maintain the required body temperature. It guarantees comfort and convenience in all activities.

DRYFOR®

A functional fiber that excellently absorbs body moisture and wicks away sweat. Thanks to the micro-grooves on its surface, moisture is efficiently carried to the outer side of the fabric where it evaporates quickly, keeping your skin dry and comfortable. This property allows the material to provide perfect body temperature regulation.

DOUBLE WEAVE

Lightweight, durable material that is specifically double-woven. Its main advantage is high strength, durability and elasticity. Provides excellent resistance to windchills. Of course, it is highly breathable and has quick drying DRYFOR finish and UV protection.

Frequently asked questions

Which insulated men’s trousers should I choose for winter?

It depends on the activity. For skiing, there are ski trousers rated down to -20 °C (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale), mostly insulated with FURTHERM. For winter walks and hikes, insulated softshell trousers with a microfleece lining rated down to -10 °C work well, as do insulated waterproof outdoor trousers with a TERATEX® membrane (water column 10,000 mm) and a fleece lining. For cross-country skiing, choose lighter multisport softshell trousers.

What men’s trousers should I wear for hiking?

In summer, lightweight outdoor trousers in a stretchy fabric with DRYFOR technical fibre, which wicks sweat; for longer hikes and windy weather, sturdier trousers in double-woven DOUBLE WEAVE fabric. In spring and autumn, softshell trousers are practical; in winter, insulated softshell or insulated waterproof outdoor trousers. For an unexpected shower, overtrousers are handy - you can pull them on over other trousers, even with your boots on.

What men’s trousers should I wear for cross-country skiing?

For cross-country skiing, choose stretchy trousers that protect you from the wind and wick sweat well. Most NORDBLANC multisport softshell trousers have insulated SOFTSHIELD® softshell with fleece at the front and stretchy POWERFLEECE at the back, are rated down to -10 °C or -20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale and have reflective details. For warmer days, there are lightweight softshell trousers with ventilation zips.

How do I choose the right size of men’s trousers?

Almost every model has a size chart with a diagram on its product page, showing where each measurement is taken. The most reliable way to find your size is to measure a pair of trousers that fit you well, laid flat, and compare the measurements with the chart. NORDBLANC men’s trousers come in sizes S-XXXL, some models also in XS; with ski and insulated trousers, allow for a base layer underneath.
