How to choose women’s ski trousers

All NORDBLANC women’s ski trousers are waterproof and rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. They differ mainly in membrane, insulation, fit and features – choose according to the weather you ski in and how long you ski for.

Classic ski trousers for the slopes

Classic ski trousers with a TERATEX® membrane are mostly insulated with FURTHERM fill made of hollow polyester fibre and have a looser Regular fit. Most have TERATEX® 20000 ELP with a water column of 20,000 mm, taped seams and detachable braces; all have inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip that you pull over your ski boots.

For snowfall, wet snow and whole days outdoors

If you ski in all weathers and spend whole days on the slopes, you’ll appreciate a water column of 30,000 mm. Trousers with a DERMIZAX™ membrane (with a breathability of 30,000 g/m²/24 h) and trousers with TERATEX® 30000 ELP have it. The DERMIZAX™ models have FURTHERM insulation, taped seams, waterproof zips, detachable braces and inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip.

Close-fitting softshell ski trousers

Softshell ski trousers are made of a stretchy fabric with 16% elastane and insulated with fleece, so they fit snugly and don’t hold you back. They have waterproof zips and the same TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane as most of the classic models – you’ll appreciate them if you want trousers that don’t bag anywhere.

For snowboarding

On a snowboard, you sit and kneel in the snow more often, so choose a water column of at least 20,000 mm and taped seams. The looser Regular fit leaves enough room at the knees, and detachable braces keep the trousers in place even when you fall.

How to read the specifications of women’s ski trousers

  • Water column – 10,000 mm is enough for skiing in good weather, 20,000 mm handles falling snow and a wet chairlift seat, and 30,000 mm whole days in bad weather. Most models have 20,000 mm; the range is 10,000–30,000 mm.
  • Breathability – the higher the value, the less clammy you’ll get in the trousers. Most models have 15,000 g/m²/24 h, trousers with DERMIZAX™ and TERATEX® 30000 ELP 30,000 g/m²/24 h.
  • Warmth – all models are rated down to −20 °C on NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale. But everyone feels the cold differently: if you’ll be standing in a lift queue or sitting on a chairlift for a long time, wear warmer thermal underwear under your trousers.
  • Insulation and lining – the classic models are mostly insulated with FURTHERM, which keeps you warm even when damp and dries quickly; the softshell ski trousers with fleece.
  • Taped seams and waterproof zips – stop water getting in through the seams and zips. Most classic models have taped seams, and most ski trousers overall have waterproof zips.
  • Inner snow gaiters with anti-slip grip – an inner cuff that goes over your ski boot and keeps snow out of your boots and trousers. Three-quarters of the models have them – all the classic ones.
  • Hem zips – make it easier to put your boots on and pull the legs over your ski boots. Most models have them.
  • Braces – more than half of the models have detachable braces, mainly the classic insulated trousers.

Washing and reproofing women’s ski trousers

Wash ski trousers according to the care label with a detergent for technical fabrics, without fabric softener, with the zips closed and the braces detached. Dry them laid out loosely, not on a radiator. As soon as water stops forming droplets, a spray-on or wash-in proofer will restore the surface’s water repellency.

Frequently asked questions

What water column should I choose for women’s ski trousers?

For skiing in good weather, 10,000 mm is enough; for falling snow, wet snow and whole days on the slopes, choose 20,000 mm or more. In the snow, trousers usually take more strain than a jacket – sitting on a wet chairlift seat, kneeling or falling puts more water pressure on them. Most NORDBLANC women’s ski trousers have a TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane with 20,000 mm, and models with DERMIZAX™ have 30,000 mm. Besides the number, taped seams and waterproof zips also make a difference.

Are there close-fitting women’s ski trousers?

Yes, the softshell ski trousers made of stretchy fabric with elastane have a close-fitting Slim fit. They have a TERATEX® 20000 ELP membrane with a water column of 20,000 mm, are rated down to −20 °C (NORDBLANC’s indicative warmth scale) like the other ski trousers, and have an adjustable belt instead of braces. If you wear thicker thermal underwear under your trousers or ride a snowboard, choose classic ski trousers with a looser Regular fit.

Women’s ski trousers with or without braces?

Braces are worth having for all-day skiing and snowboarding: they keep the trousers in place when you fall or lean forward, so snow doesn’t get in at the waist so easily. More than half of NORDBLANC women’s ski trousers have detachable braces, mainly the classic models with a TERATEX® or DERMIZAX™ membrane, and you can detach them when you don’t need them. The close-fitting softshell ski trousers have no braces; you adjust the waist with an adjustable belt.

What should I wear under women’s ski trousers?

Technical thermal underwear belongs under ski trousers – thermal bottoms in a fabric that wicks sweat and dries quickly. Leave cotton at home: it holds moisture and then feels cold when it’s chilly. For severe cold, choose winter or merino wool base layers; for spring skiing, a thin layer is enough.
